German Histories

Something new from Avonmore Books: German fighter wing histories. More will be listed if these prove popular.

Avonmore Books is pleased to offer Erik Mombeeck’s exceptional German fighter wing (JG: Jagdgeschwader) histories. Only recently available in English, these are books of great quality and merit, giving a daily chronicle of the exertions of Germany’s elite fighter pilots.

In the days leading to Germany’s surrender in 1945, most military records were destroyed. For that reason alone, the compilation of German histories is difficult. In respect to the Jadgwaffe – the fighter arm – the task is even harder given the majority of pilots did not survive the war. In the 1980s a young Belgian researcher, Erik Mombeeck, made contact with several Jadgwaffe veterans who recognised the need to write unit histories. From that small beginning a vast amount of historical research was accomplished.

Three decades later, we can enjoy the benefits of this painstaking work. Mombeeck was able to interview and draw on the records of hundreds of Jadgwaffe pilots and ground staff, or their surviving families. He also received support from many researchers, primarily in Germany and France. Rebuilding these unit histories has been a detective work of the highest order. The most reliable building block has been the pilots flying logs. Many were held privately by the families of deceased pilots.

Mombeeck tells the story of each JG in a fine detail never previously published. The challenges faced by the German pilots and their tactical responses make a fascinating story. For English-speaking readers, viewing the war from a German (non-political) perspective is most interesting. Appendices list individual pilot fates and claims made. The text is supported by high quality maps, a great many photographs and colour aircraft profiles.
